Minimum wage increases from January 1, 2023

The government intends to increase the minimum wage nationwide from January 1, 2023.

The Minister of Labor, Marius Budăi, declared on Tuesday that he wants the new version of the minimum wage to come into force from January 1, most likely 3,000 lei, of which 200 lei would be exempt from tax.

"Since mid-2022, we have made available to the business environment an amount of 200 lei that they can provide as a salary to their employees, an amount of 200 lei where the state does not charge any tax. Until now, it was up to the employer to decide, now we want to introduce it into the 3,000 lei and continue this practice, namely not to tax them," Marius Budăi declared in Parliament, according to Agerpres.

At one salary minimum of 3,000 lei gross, the employee would receive a net salary of 1,755 lei, and the employer would bear a salary cost of 3,068 lei, with all taxes, without exemptions.

If the measure "200 lei extra for salary minimum (tax-exempt voluntary increase)", already introduced as of June 1, 2022, the minimum wage for 2023 would look like this:

At a gross minimum salary of 3,000 lei, the employee receives a net remuneration of 1,838 lei, and the company bears a full salary of 2,980 lei, explains StartUp Cafe.

Currently, the minimum wage in the economy is 2550 lei gross. At this salary level, the employee receives a net salary of 1491 lei, and the company bears a full salary cost of 2607 lei.

1.3 million employees in Romania are paid the minimum wage.
